People and property weren’t the only victims of Hurricane Sandy.

Meadville-based Ainsworth Pet Nutrition, well known as the maker of Dad’s pet foods, has made a donation to help four-legged victims left homeless or separated from their families by the deadly storm.

The family owned company donated more than four tons of its premium Rachael Ray Nutrish pet foods and snacks to a newly established animal shelter in Queens, N.Y.

The shelter is being funded through a $500,000 donation from Rachael’s Rescue, an organization started by Food Network personality Rachael Ray for whom Ainsworth produces the Nutrish line of foods.

Ray’s organization has made nearly $4 million worth of donations from the sale of Meadville-made Nutrish products.

“This storm was so devastating,” said Faith Radcliffe, vice president of marketing at Ainsworth. “Helping those friends with a donation of pet food is the least we can do.”
