Erie’s newest chocolate store — one with a history of nearly 110 years — will officially open its doors at 10:30 a.m. today.

That’s when Pulakos Chocolates holds a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new store at 410 French St. The store marks the return of Pulakos to downtown Erie after an absence of nearly 40 years.

“Pulakos was part of downtown Erie for many years and sadly had to move out in the early 1970s,” said Joe Hilbert, who purchased the company from the Pulakos family in 2009.

The new location, which will feature coffee and pastries in addition to candy, is the company’s third location.

John Buchna, chief executive of the Erie Downtown Partnership, said the new store could be important to downtown Erie.

“The economic impact of Pulakos returning to downtown Erie not only directly affects the employees of t his business, but also has an effect on the people coming downtown to shop and enjoy local products,” he said.

Free samples are being offered today.
