Erie’s GE Transportation wins company’s top honor

GE Transportation isn’t the largest of the General Electric Co.’s numerous businesses, but in 2012 it was the best.

That’s the judgment of Chairman and Chief Executive Jeff Immelt, who singled out GE Transportation as the company’s “Business of the Year.”

Immelt made that announcement recently at a global leadership meeting in Boca Raton, Fla. that was attended by Lorenzo Simonelli, chief executive of GE Transportation.

Passing out the chairman’s award is an annual tradition, said Ann Miller, a spokeswoman at the Lawrence Park plant. “Business of the Year,” is the company’s top honor and is given each year to the GE business with the strongest performance.

Recent evidence of that performance came in October, when the company’s transportation business announced that profits had risen 35 percent to $265 million during the third quarter of the year. That was the highest profit growth for any of the company’s businesses.

“It’s a point of pride,” Miller said of the honor. “Receiving this award is a reflection of the great work of our employees here in Erie and around the world.”

Some of GE’s numerous businesses include divisions focused on aviation, health care, energy, appliances and lighting.
