Engines and drive components built at GE Transportation plants in Erie and Grove City will soon be used to refurbish existing Russian locomotives.

GE Transportation, which has its main manufacturing plant in Erie, announced this morning that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with Yakutia Railways of Russia “to explore the possibility of forming a strategic relationship to modernize diesel electric locomotives.”

Under the terms of the agreement, GE Transportation will supply a minimum of 20 engine kits per year over each of the next five years.

In addition, the agreement calls for GE Transportation to work with Russian railways to provide service training to maintain and overhaul the modernized engines.
