Erie’s unemployment jumps on post-holiday job losses

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for Erie County climbed three-tens of a percentage point in January to 8 percent. That’s the highest rate we’ve had in several months.
Despite this increase, Erie’s rate remains below the statewide rate of 8.2 percent. Erie has had a lower rate than the rest of the state for 12 consecutive months.
The unemployment number was driven up by the end of the shopping season, which brought a typical job decline in the retail trade sector, down 900 in January, as businesses released their seasonal hires.
