Union workers at GE Transportation are planning a public rally Tuesday as they prepare to bargain with the company over plans to eliminate 950 jobs at the Lawrence Park plant.

The rally is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. in a parking lot near the intersection of Water and Main streets in Lawrence Park.
“We are going to rally for community support to keep as many jobs in Erie as possible,” said Roger Zaczyk, president of the Local 506 of the United Electrical Radio and Machine Workers of America.

“The focus is going to be making people in Erie aware that we are a big part of the community,” he said. If the proposed job cuts take place, “There is going to be a big chunk of money gone out of this community.”

As a condition of its contract with the union, the company is expected to provide the union with detailed information about the work transfer and the possible job loss.

After that information is received, the union and the company will begin a 60-day bargaining process.
