Just days before the process of decision bargaining is set to begin Monday, union employees at GE Transportation had a chance to offer their input and hear from their new union president.

Scott Duke, who was installed this week as president of Local 506 of the United Electrical Radio and Machine Workers of America, said a series of membership meetings are being held throughout the day today.

Those meetings were to be held at the union hall at 3929 Main St., Lawrence Park.
Duke, who replaces Roger Zaczyk in that post, said today that he didn’t want to say much in advance of negotiations with the company, which has announced that it plans to eliminate 950 union jobs at the Lawrence Park plant in addition to 100 management positions.

During a rally Tuesday, Duke said he was prepared to negotiate, but not surrender.
“I promise, with me at your helm, we are not going to back down, “ he said Tuesday. “I promise you that. We stand together.”
Management at GE Transportation has indicated that it’s open to the possibility of reducing the number of planned job cuts.
