Apple’s iPad arrives in Erie; supply is good

Apple’s newest iPad made its Erie debut this morning, greeted by customers ready to snap up the third-generation device with a starting price of $499.

But they didn’t all get snapped up.

The Walmart Supercenter on Downs Drive, which began selling the new model at 12:01 a.m., was sold out by late this morning.

But across Peach Street at Best Buy, Linda Baskit, one of the store’s managers, said the store has a good supply on hand.

“We have all kinds of them,” she said. “We have lots of quantity.”

That’s not to suggest she’s not seeing enthusiasm for the new model, which features a faster processor, a much sharper screen and an improved camera.
Baskit said 20 o 30 people were waiting in line when the store opened at 10 a.m.

Despite competition from cheaper tablet computers such as Inc.’s Kindle Fire, the iPad remains the most popular tablet computer. Apple Inc. has sold more than 55 million iPads since its debut in 2010.
