Still no clear answers on crop damage for Erie County farmers

Many of the area’s grape growers still don’t know what, if any, price they will pay for subfreezing temperatures earlier this week.
John Griggs, manager of the Lake Erie Regional Grape Research Lab in North East Township, said today that it’s not yet clear if the grape crop was damaged by temperatures that fell below 20 degrees in some areas.
“We are still in that mode where we really can’t see it too clearly,” he said.
While the grape lab is located near the lake, on Route 5, Griggs said growers who live further inland may have experienced even colder temperatures.
The threat of frost damage to Erie County fruit crops won’t pass until early May.
