Erie farmer: Sweet corn crop comes in early

If you’re hoping there will be corn on the cob at next week’s Fourth of July picnic, you are in luck.
“This year’s phenomenal weather and early growing season have given us early strawberries and now corn,” John Mason Sr. of Mason Farms said.
He noted that they started picking strawberries on May 27, and that they started picking corn on June 13 on his farms in Virginia.
“March and April were good to us. We had better-than-expected weather, allowing us to get on the fields earlier than we ever have,” he said. That was true in Virginia and Pennsylvania.
He said they even started picking raspberries on June 14 – also the earliest on record for them.
The sweet corn is now available at Mason Farms Country Market, 839 Peninsula Drive, at Mason Farms’ roadside stand in Lake City, at 4115 Old French Road, and at the Country Fair locations at West Eighth Street and Bayfront Parkway, Oliver Road and Peach Street, and at Route 6N and Interstate 79 in Edinboro.
