Government payment of utility bills a scam

Let’s set politics aside for the moment. Neither President Barack Obama nor Gov. Mitt Romney has a plan to pay everyone’s electric bill.

Scammers, it turns out, are trying to convince folks otherwise.

Ohio-based FirstEnergy Corp., parent company of Penelec, is warning customers to be wary of bogus claims that President Obama will help pay utility bills for residential customers.

The scam, which has been reported in several states, involves asking customers to provide sensitive information, including social security numbers.

Scammers provide customers with a phony bank routing number to pay their bills. However, no government dollars are applied to customer accounts.
FirstEnergy is reminding customers that its employees do not ask for sensitive information, such as bank account numbers.
