Erie Insurance reponds to hurricane damage

Erie-based Erie Insurance has about 3 million policies in effect in the regions hit by Hurricane Sandy.

Early claims, which began to come in Tuesday, indicate that the hardest hit area for Erie Insurance customers are eastern Maryland, and eastern and central Pennsylvania, said Gary Sullivan, vice president of property and subrogation claims for the company.

The insurer, which is Erie County’s third largest employer, began moving people and resources into position over the weekend.

In most cases, adjusters and other employees were moved into staging areas just outside places expected to sustain heavy damage.

Sullivan said Maryland, Philadelphia, Harrisburg, northern Virginia, New York and Ohio have all experienced higher claim activity.

“Power outages are of primary concern throughout all of these markets, but particularly in parts of West Virginia that have been hit hard with snow,” Sullivan said.

Closer to home, fallen tree limbs have been the cause of minor damage, but nothing significant.
