Erie area car dealer Suzuki Joe to say goodbye to Suzuki

Suzuki Joe is about to lose his Suzuki dealership.

That’s no fault of Joe Askins, vice president of Auto Express Suzuki on Route 8 in Greene Township.

Askins, whose voice and nickname, Suzuki Joe, are familiar to those who follow the dealership’s advertisements, said he learned Monday that Suzuki Motor Corp. plans to discontinue car sales in the United States sometime during the 2013 model year.

That decision was a broader plan for Chapter 11 bankruptcy that will allow the Toyko-based company to restructure its U.S. operations.

Askins, whose dealership is in the process of opening a used car outlet at 9070 Peach St., said that plan will go forward.

He also stressed that Auto Express will remain in business, selling used cars as well as new Suzuki motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles.

The dealership will continue to perform warranty work on Suzuki cars.

“It should be seamless,” Askins said. “We aren’t going anywhere.”
