Erie’s Hero BX says no connection to Canadian investigation

Erie-based Lake Erie Biofuels LLC, which does business as Hero BX, has confirmed that it sold biodiesel in 2009 and 2010 to a Canadian company that is being investigated by Canadian authorities.

But the company says that is its only connection to a case that involves allegations that the fuel was shipped repeatedly back and forth between the United States and Canada without ever being unloaded, allowing the shipping firm to collect a reported $2.6 million.

The story was reported earlier this month by CBC News, a Canadian news organization that claims the shipments were arranged by Bioversal Trading Inc.

CBC reported that “officials are now investigating claims the companies were routing American-made biodiesel through Canada and falsifying its origin to avoid paying tens of millions of dollars in European anti-dumping duties.”

Hero BX, which makes about 45 million gallons of fuel a year, said in a statement: “Hero BX had no role in the export of any biodiesel to Europe and has no knowledge of the nature or scope of the investigation of Bioversel Trading being conducted by Canadian authorities.”
