Lost NHL games meant lost marketing for Erie’s Smith Provision Co.

A 113-day lockout meant lost paychecks for National Hockey League fans and lost games for their fans.

Erie-based Smith Provision Co., maker of the official hot dog of the Pittsburgh Penguins, lost something too.

Thirty-four missed games meant thousands of Smith’s hot dogs and kielbasa grinders that were never sold.

Even more importantly, said Mike Weber, chief executive of the family owned company, was the lost opportunity to build its reputation in the Pittsburgh market.
