Refund wait to continue for many taxpayers

Here’s some bad news if you’re waiting for a tax refund after claiming education tax credits. If you prepared your taxes with H&R Block tax software, you might have to wait a while longer.

In an e-mail message sent to many of its customers this morning, H&R Block acknowledged a problem related to education tax credits.

According to the IRS, delays will affect about 600,000 taxpayers who used tax software that left electronic forms blank instead of responding with an N for no.
MarketWatch is reporting that the IRS is able to keep processing the returns now that it is aware of the widespread error, but that affected taxpayers will still face delays of up to several weeks.

Published reports suggest H&R Block software was the only program affected by the problem.

In its letter to customers, H&R Block wrote: “We sincerely regret this inconvenience and want to assure you that we are doing everything possible to work with the IRS and to resolve this issue quickly.”

In most cases, the company said, taxpayers won’t need to take any additional steps unless directed to by the IRS.

But at least for now, the wait for tax refunds could continue.
