Ammunition in short supply in Erie area

Clair Henley, manager of the Erie Sport Store, has seen the supply of ammunition tighten before as demand temporarily outpaced the supply.

But he’s never seen anything like this.

Fifty or 100 times a day, he said, an employee in the store’s firearms department delivers the same news to a disappointed customer. There’s no .22 caliber ammunition in stock. And not any 9 mm or .380 either.

It’s the same way all over the region. Dave Wurst, one of the owners of Presque Isle Gun Shop, said even when he does have the ammunition his customers want, he often has to limit the amount they can buy.

It’s not that manufacturers have stopped making bullets.

What has changed is that customers are buying it as fast as retailers can stock their shelves.
