UE 506 begins talks with GE Transportation

Local 506 of the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America entered negotiations with GE Transportation Monday looking for financial information and a pledge of a common goal.

For its part, GE Transportation asked the union to keep secret any information that it does provide.
That’s according to a news leaflet published Tuesday by the union.

Officials from GE and the UE sat down Monday to begin the process of decision bargaining following a recent announcement by the company that it plans to eliminate 950 union jobs in Erie.

Both the company and the union have said they hope to reduce that number through a 60-day negotiating process.
The UE’s leaflet says in part: “At the beginning of the meeting, the union told GE that our goal is to retain all 950 jobs in Erie and asked GE to enter these negotiations with the same goal.”

The union also reports that it asked the company to provide cost comparisons for performing work at plants in Lawrence Park and in Fort Worth, Texas.

The company had previously made the case that the plant in Fort Worth is more productive than the one in Lawrence Park.
While the company asked for a confidentiality agreement, union officials said an existing agreement requires the union to keep that information confidential.

More talks are expected later this week.
