Erie’s Kraus Department store collects honor

Kraus Department Store, a fixture on Parade Street since 1886 and a winner of the 2012 Commitment to Erie Award, has collected another honor.

Denver-based Pro Hardware has recognized the 127-year-old store with the 2013 Paul L. Cosgrave Memorial Award. The award is presented annually to a Pro Hardware retailer in recognition of superior commitment to the principles and ideals of effective hardware merchandising associated with the chain’s founder, Paul L. Cosgrave.

The store, built by Edward Kraus, remains in the same three-story brick building and is operated today by two of his great grandchildren, Tom and Joe Nowosielski, along with their mother, Lou Ann Nowosielski.

“They are a true independent store and an integral part of their community,” said Shari Kalbach, managing director of Pro Group Inc. “They’re also great at listening to what their customers need and want. Pro Hardware is proud to be associated with Kraus Department Store.”

Kraus was honored in September 2012 with one of the first-ever Commitment to Erie Awards, sponsored by the Erie Times-News.
