Erie County will be home to new Indian motorcycle dealership

Indian Motorcycles — one of the most storied names in motorcycle history — has been overhauled and is ready to ride after being acquired by Polaris Industries in 2011.

And now, as the company’s new motorcycles are set to hit the market, one of the nation’s first Indian dealerships will open soon in Erie County.

Joe Askins, vice president of Off Road Express and Auto Express at 10320 Wattsburg Road, Greene Township, said he’s been in talks for more than a year about becoming an Indian dealer.

His dealership, which opens within the next couple weeks, is one of the first in the region, opening ahead of Indian dealerships that might come to Pittsburgh, Buffalo or Cleveland.

Askins, who will host “Demo Days” on Oct. 8-9, said 16 new Indian motorcycles will be on hand and available for test drives for anyone with a motorcycle license.

Although he doesn’t have any motorcycles in stock, Askins said he’s already sold more than 20 and has about 70 more people on a list who are waiting to try one.

“It’s exciting,” he said. “This is a very iconic brand. “
