L. Press & Co., 1216 State St., survived the Great Depression, World War II and 85 Erie winters.
But the store, which specializes in men’s clothing and work boots, won’t see another winter. Owner Art Press hopes to close sometime in September.
Press, who is 65, said he’s been working at the store since he was 15. But business has slowed in recent years with the loss of some major employers, including Steris Corp. and International Paper Co.
Press said Internet sales have also taken a big bite out of his receipts.
“If we had looked to stay in business, we would have to restructure and do a lot of our business on the Internet. I didn’t want to start fresh,” he said.
