Republican U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly of Butler was prominently featured in a recent Washington Post piece on lawmakers who backed legislation that could benefit themselves or their family members.

One of the examples cited in the piece is that of a Pennsylvania congressman – Kelly – who “co-sponsored a natural gas bill as Exxon Mobil negotiated a deal that paid millions for his wife’s shares in two natural gas companies founded by her great-great-grandfather”
Kelly’s office, in a statement, denied any ethical violations.

  1. Al Richardson says:

According to the referenced report, Rep Mike Kelly and his wife are partners in two natural gas companies (Campbells Gas Partners and PC Exploration Ltd.) that have land along the Marcellus Shale. The couple earned between $37,000 and $100,000 from their holdings in 2011.

Both as a candidate and congressman, Kelly has advocated Marcellus Shale gas development. Last year Kelly joined the Marcellus Shale Caucus, which held its organizational meeting on April 1, 2011. Six days later, he voted for a bill to bar the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from regulating greenhouse gases. Some scientists have warned that large quantities of greenhouse gases can be released during fracking.

In two congressional hearings last May, Kelly railed against the EPA for efforts to regulate the industry and for investigating concerns about water contamination in relation to fracking. Kelly did not disclose that he held a financial stake in shale gas extraction.
