Lakewood United Methodist Church and AAA are teaming up to offer a free Bicycle Safety Rally for children this weekend in Millcreek Township.

The event will take place Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon at the church, 3856 W. 10th St.

Organizers said the rally will feature games, a riding course, snacks and helmet giveaways.

Children ages 5 to 14 years are welcome with their bicycles. Children ages 3 and 4 can also go if they can ride their bikes, organizers said.

When I was learning to drive, I asked my dad to show me how to change a tire. He bought me a AAA membership instead.

I’ve had one ever since. For me, the annual fee is worth it. Membership means I’m just a phone call away from getting a flat tire fixed, a dead battery jumped or a broken vehicle towed. Plus there are the numerous maps and travel books I get each year for trips. And what I consider the biggest advantage — the money my membership saves me on hotel/motel rates.

The AAA room discount is the feature most people are probably familiar with. But there are other financial benefits.

Your AAA card gets you a 10 percent discount on non-sale items at Payless Shoe Source stores. That means the $10 flip-flops I bought last week for an upcoming trip to Las Vegas were only $9. Maybe that dollar I saved will be the lucky one that wins me a fortune in a slot machine!
