Did your kids go crazy when the U.S. men’s hockey team beat Russia in a shootout at the Olympics? Have they turned your living room into a rink, skating around in their socks and knocking over lamps with brooms filling in for hockey sticks?

Whether you think you have a future Olympian or just have a child who wants to play, you’ll want to investigate Try Hockey for Free Day.

USA Hockey and local programs around the country are giving children ages 4 to 9 the chance to try youth hockey on March 1. Coaches will be present to teach hockey basics and a limited amount of equipment will be available for children to use.

The Try Hockey for Free website at  has a map of participating locations and it includes Erie’s JMC Ice Arena, 423 W. 38th St. Visit the site to learn more or register a child.

For more information, contact your local rink, USA Hockey at (719) 538-1124 or

If you’re one of the first 25,000 people to sign up and if Julie Chu scores a goal during a 2014 Olympic women’s hockey game, you can win free paper towels.

Registration for the Score One for Bounty promo began Dec. 20 and ends Feb. 18 or when there are 25,000 registrations, according to the official rules. I tried today and got the message “You are eligible to win!” so I hope that means I’m one of the 25,000.

The winners will get a free single role of Bounty paper towels awarded as a coupon redeemable at participating Dollar General stores.

When I was exploring the Erie Otters website to see if they had any upcoming promotions of interest, I found a link to OHL Livestream, which is offering two days when you can watch hockey for free.

The fan appreciation days are today and Saturday and the list of Ontario Hockey League games I saw available at included Erie at Owen Sound tonight at 7:30.

To watch for free, you have to enter the promo code OHLFree2012, according to the promo I saw. Single games usually cost $6.99, according to the site.
