Word up on a big word event and, no, we’re not talking about a Words with Friends tournament.
This is Poetry in the Park, Erie’s outdoor poetry festival, set for Saturday from 2 to 9 p.m. in Frontier Park.
Hosted by Heidi Blakesee, the event will feature more than 20 poets on the amphitheater stage, located on the park’s north side below the tennis courts.
Among those you’ll hear: John Burroughs, Dianne Boresenik, Cee Williams, Chuck Joy, Kurt Sahlmann, Kim Noyes, Asa Rolla and the Ascorbic Acid Heads (that sounds interesting), Monica Igras, Kat Wolper, Kim Noyes, Ellis Crockett, Maris Moks-Unger, Don Carroll, Niki Knight, Megan Collins, Jack Wonner, Marge Wonner and Thasia Anne.
Admission is free. Spread the spoken word.
Dan Schell will host another book signing for “9 Years of Rock: The Story of the Concerts at the Erie County Fieldhouse” at a special site — the former Fieldhouse itself. It’s set for July 29 from 1 to 3 p.m. You can visit the site, reminisce and maybe engage Jeff Crock in a trivia contest about all the shows that went on there.
Train’s “50 Ways to Say Goodbye” is inching up Billboard’s Adult Pop chart. The second single from “California 37 rises to No. 23 from No. 26 on the latest chart.
The Avett Brothers will release “The Carpenter, the follow-up to 2009′s “I and Love and You” (Dr. Rock’s album of the year) on Sept. 11. Rick Rubin produced, again. Rolling Stone, last time I check, was streaming the first single, a banjo-fueled song with an infectious chorus.
Wish we could get them into the Warner.
Look for the 814 MC Showcase Party on July 13 at 9 p.m. at On Deck. More than a dozen local hip-hop artists will perform, including Devious, Rastik, Payso, Jae Neph, Nicolette, Young Strav, Young Geek, Street Money, Mega Diesel and more. Cover will be $5, though ladies pay just $2 between 9 and 10:30 p.m.
Hot comedian Louis CK will open his stand-up tour with two shows at Cleveland’s Severance Hall on Oct. 3 and tickets will go fast. Try logging onto www.louisck.net. They’re $45 each. I scored two for the late show, yahoo.
