New concerts; Rock Hall nominees

Nominees for the 2013 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame were announced today and include some surprises.
Both Rush and Deep Purple made the list. Of course, that doesn’t mean they’ll ultimately be enshrined but it’s cool to see them at least in the running.
Other nominees include Heart, Public Enemy, N.W.A., Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Chic, Albert King, Kraftwerk, Marvelettes, Meters, Randy Newman, Procul Harum, and Donna Summer.
For the first time, fan will get to register their favorites. You can vote at www.rollingstone. All votes will be collected with the top 5 fan favorites comprising one actual voting ballot. One out of 600 total. So, unless it breaks a tie, it really doesn’t matter.
Usually five make the final cut. The 2013 field doesn’t include a single “no-brainer” like a U2 or Rolling Stones. So, I do think Rush will finally make it, along with Randy Newman, Kraftwerk, the Marvelettes, and Albert King..
At least one early influence always makes it; that’ll be the Marvelettes this time around. Too many other similar vocals groups are in; why excluded them?. Kraftwerk was a pioneering band. King was one of the all-time blues guitarists; he influences abounds. Newman is one of our finest singer-songwriters and satirists; if Leonard Cohen made it, then he certainly belongs.
Tthough you can make persuasive arguments for N.W.A. and Public Enemy, they could divide the voting too evenly to make the final five. And I don’t see both Deep Purple and Rush making it, so my vote is for Rush.

Rolling Stone reports the Replacements will release a four-song covers EP. Don’t get too exited. Just Paul Westerberg and Tommy Stinson participated; Chris Mars sat out. And just 250 copies will be pressed (on vinyl) for the covers set to be auctioned off. Proceeds will go towards medical proceeds for former Replacements’ guitarist Slim Dunlap, who had a stroke earlier in 2012.
