CelebrateErie starts tonight with Taste of Erie, including Ruby Port performing in the gazebo at 6 p.m.
Sha Na Na headlines on Friday at 9 p.m. preceded by an all-star Erie band performing highlights from Woodstock at 7:30 p.m. This weekend marks the 44th anniversary of the legendary festival. The Erie group will pla songs by Joe Cocker, Canned Heat, Jefferson Airplane, Sly and the Famiy Stone and more; performers include the core band of Eric Brewer, Doug Phillips and Ron Sutton. Singers and other guests include Kayti Stadler, Matt Boland, Monical Lewis, Ron Yarosz, Roy Hollis and Tony Kellog, among others.

Bret Michaels rocks on Saturday at 9 p.m.; Lonestar — with Richie McDonald back on vocals — headlines on Sunday at 8 p.m. right before fireworks.

Grab Showcase today for a lot more info, including interviews with all three headliners. Sha Na Na tells a great story about how Jimi Hendrix got them the Woodstock gig, then protected their spot in the lineup. Woodstock’s exposure, through the film and the album soundtrack, ignited Sha Na Na’s career.
True fact: Dave Grohl is related to Sha Na Na original member Jocko Marcellini; Grohl is married to his niece. So, Grohl jumped on stage with Sha Na Na at a recent “Grease Sing-Along” show at the Hollywood Bowl. See the YouTube clip here.

Today’s Showcase also has schedules for everything, including the 11th and State stage, which will feature plenty of good local bands.

Alkaline Trio and New Found Glory will team up at Pittsburgh’s Stage AE on Sept. 14. Ticketes go on sale Aug. 21 at Ticketmaster.

The next Steel City Con, a pop-culture convention in Monroeville, is set for Dec. 6-8 with “Star Trek’s” George Takei as special guest. Michael Biehn (from “The Terminator”) and Catherine Bach (Daisy Duke) will also appear. See www.steelcitycon.com for more details.

Def Leppard: Viva Hysteria, a live concert filmed at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas, will screen at Tinseltown on Oct. 2. It includes a front-to-back performance of the band’s classic “Hysteria” album, plus their greatest hits.
