A patchwork pitching staff nearly put together a third straight shutout for the Erie SeaWolves on Sunday afternoon.

Erie finally allowed a run to Akron after 25 innings, but still won 5-1 at Canal Park. Cristo Arnal ended the Aeros’ drought when he scored an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Arnal scored off Robbie Weinhardt, Erie’s second pitcher. Weinhardt pitched two innings in relief of spot starter Rob Waite, who first filled in for L.J. Gagnier (blister) and the Ramon Garcia (promoted to Triple-A Toledo).

Bryan Pounds had two hits and droveĀ  in two runs for the SeaWolves (51-57), who have Monday off before they open a six-game homestand. Pounds could get the bulk of the starts at third base with Francisco Martinez’s trade to the Seattle Mariners organization.

The Boston Red Sox traded Erie native and Portland Sea Dogs catcher Tim Federowicz to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday. The deal, which also involved the Seattle Mariners, was completed just before Major League Baseball’s 4 p.m. trading deadline.
