Mark Leiter Jr. was averaging just under a strikeout per inning when he took the mound for New Jersey Institute of Technology Friday night.
After nine innings, that number went up.
Leiter, the son of former major league pitcher Mark Leiter and nephew of former major league pitcher Al Leiter, struck out 20 batters over nine innings in a 5-3 win over Chicago State (6-33).
It was the most strikeouts in a Division I game this season.
Leiter now has 90 strikeouts in 81 2/3 innings. He has a 5-6 record with a 3.86 ERA.
The last eight outs of Friday’s game were strikeouts.
Leiter fell short of the record of 26 strikeouts set by Buddy Schultz for Miami of Ohio against Wright State in April 1973.
