You gotta hand it to the Pittsburgh Pirates.
They must be the only team in the majors that thinks shortstop Clint Barmes is worth something.
Barmes, 34, signed a one-year deal worth $2 million.
It’s a good deal, if he could hit.
But he can’t.
Barmes hit .211 last season in 304 at-bats. He had 70 strikeouts compared to 64 hits.
And he hit .229 the year before that.
Obviously, the Pirates like his defense, and he is one of the better defensive shortstops.
But on a team in need of offense, any platoon of Jordy Mercer and Barmes is trouble.
This deal would be better for a team needing just a defensive wizard, not bats at first, right and short.
