Pirates, Indians, Tigers look to future in MLB draft

It’s been a long time since the Pirates have picked late in the MLB draft.

After two decades of futility, the Pirates will pick No. 24 in Thursday’s draft. The Indians will pick 21st overall and the Tigers 23rd.

Baseball America’s mock draft has the Pirates selecting high school outfielder Monte Harrison.

Here’s what mlb.com has to say about Harrison, a five-tool outfielder:

Monte Harrison has bat speed and good balance at the plate and just needs more at-bats to become more consistent at the plate.

Harrison, of Lee’s Summit West High School in Missouri, is rated as one of the best outfielders in the draft. The problem with Harrison is he could opt to play football at Nebraska.

BA has the Indians selecting TCU lefty Brandon Finnegan. MLB.com’s report on Finnegan, 5-11, 185 pounds, says his fastball can hit the upper 90s.

BA has the Tigers going after a pitcher — Nick Burdi.

Scouts project Louisville’s Burdi as a reliever, something the Tigers could use.

Armed with a 100 mph fastball, Burdi would fit in as a future member of the Detroit bullpen.
