My mother watched it. I watched it. My college roommates watched it. In retirement, my father watched it — peeking around the newspaper so we didn’t think he was watching.

The Young and the Restless is celebrating 40 years on CBS, and if you need any evidence of its popularity, just go to the Emergency Room. I was there a few years ago, and a bunch of strangers made me realize the popularity of this program that started out as a 30-minute show in 1973.

“Is that Mrs. Chancellor (Katherine Chancellor/Jeanne Cooper)? She’s been on there forever,” one patient said.

From another patient: “Oh look, it’s Nikki …. and Victor. Are they married?”

Victor Newman (Eric Braeden) and  Nikki Reed (Melody Thomas Scottare the supercouple on this show.  In today’s episode, the couple wraps up a fourth wedding — to each other. Not that they’ve been un-restless in between those nuptials. Victor has been married 14 times and Nikki has headed to the altar 11 times. Lots of partners over 40 years and a lot of cake, flowers, engagement rings, tuxes and wedding dresses. Clearly this pair has kept everyone in Genoa City, Wisc., the fictitious city that is the supposed home to all the Y&R faithful, working — well at least for 25 weddings!

For a few moments in the ER, it was like watching old friends you grew up with return to life. I have no idea who some of these people are, but I do recognize many of the characters. To catch up, check out Soapcentral.com. And (Katherine Chancellor/Jeanne Cooper) — by the way — looks great. Wanna watch? Here’s a link to the CBS website — you can watch online anytime.
