Modern Family — what does a stepmom wear to a wedding?

So what’s a mother to do? A stepmother that is.  It’s dress up time for a stepson’s wedding and the mother of the bride is wearing purple. So I guess vanilla is out the window these days and I’m glad to see it go.

So since it’s the holidays, I’m thinking cranberry, emerald or black. The bridal party is wearing brown. Hmmm. The search for a dress has not been pleasant. It left me with one conclusion. You can look like the great-great grandmother or at the other end of the spectrum, you can look, well, like you’re wearing negligee. I’m thinking something I can wear again — maybe to the Barber ball — I’m liking a one-shoulder black dress in black, cranberry or emerald. I’m off on the hunt. Tell me your thoughts.

  1. John Chacona says:

Mother of the groom? Beige dress. Stepmother of the groom? Dull beige dress.

    From Gabe’s.

  2. I empathize. Trying to find something appropriate and that FITS! is a real challenge.

  3. In Modern family weddings and modern weddings in general does anyone really care about the color? (my personal feelings are still no white or ivory thou’) I think it is safe to be classic (not boring) but conservative and elegant. Wear what looks good and feels good~
As the Stepmom, I think every modern family may have a certain “comfort” or “tension” that should quietly and respectfully be acknowledged. (don’t look too drop dead gorgeous that it turns heads from the bride)

  4. Take the world as it is not as it ought to be.
