How to stay safe on spring break

If you or your college kids are headed off for spring break, be safe and be smart. Here are some brief tips from Marcia Perot, chief safety officer at Streetsafe.com, and tips I learned from my kids, veteran spring breakers.

Never let your guard down. Pay attention to your surroundings.

Know the customs and laws of the place you are visiting if you are in a foreign country.

If the hotel or resort folks tell you not to leave the resort, don’t.

Know what to do in the event of an emergency — the number to call and what to do.

Stay in groups and use the buddy system. It’s just plain smart. Know where your friends are at all times. There are apps for you to locate each other. Use them. Be safe.

A stranger is a stranger. Do not accept rides or take off to an unknown location with someone you do not know.

Never leave your drink unattended. Ever.

Lock your hotel room, and use the hotel room safe for any valuables you leave in the room. Do not ever leave cash sitting out.

If something looks like it has been tampered with in your room, get out and report it.

Enjoy your vacation, but do it safely. And make sure someone knows where you are at all times.
