You can’t beet my share of the farm

Like many of us who love fresh veggies, I’m not  a person who plants, groom and picks them. I did that when the kids were young, but those days are over. I joined a CSA — community supported agriculture a nice acronym for buying a share of a farmer’s fresh crops. In short, I get fresh veggies every week. I buy from Gordon Post, thanks to a suggestion from Marnie Mead. We pick up veggies every Thursday.

We do get things that I don’t recognize, and I already warned my family they will be eating it — all of it. But the stuff with yellow flowers last week — we weren’t sure if you eat the flowers or the leaves. My daring son, Dr. Eckert, washed off the leaves, tasted them and said “Lettuce or something like that.”

I didn’t find that one too tasty, but the peas mmmmm. And the lettuce and beets — if you’ve never had fresh beets — you are missing something. I can’t wait to see what we get today. All our foodie writers at the Erie Times-News have recipes. It will be fresh veggies on the Eckert and Parker plates tonight.
