In an Associated Press story, AVIS  (they try harder, remember that from old advertising jingles?) bought Zipcar — a car sharing business that went public in 2011 and hit profitability last year.  The 12-year-old Zipcar company made out big in the $491.2 million deal. Here’s the full story If you have a relative who lives in a big city, you know how valuable Zipcars are. It’s high tech rentals by the hour or day — cheap. It starts with an annual membership, and rates are around $7.50 an hour – including gas, insurance and 180 miles a day.

And they are nice cars — Audis, Minicoopers and more are in Pittsburgh. No waiting in line at an airport or elsewhere to get one. The cars are usually parked in the city, and the user holds a Zipcard membership card above the card reader on the door. The locks open and voila — you’re on the road.

AVIS has high-tech rentals — now that’s trying harder.  Zoom Zoom.
