Houzz porchNo — this is not my front porch, but we have that exact pot — two of them, in fact, by the front door. I bought them years ago.

And we do have pillars. Our porch is also covered. My husband and I decided to replace the front-porch furniture this year, and that prompted an all-out search for what we could do to dress it up.

I enjoy sitting out here and looking at all the greenery Mother Nature has furnished. And, what to plant, what to sit on and what looks good sent us to all the home and garden stores and www.Houzz.com for ideas.

I’m still not sure what I want, but we are making progress. Coleus is the plant that grows really well in those pots by the door. So I am in search of it. And I am a fan of geraniums because they have never let me down, and they keep the bees away.

One thing I love to read while on the porch is of course our very own House to Home.

This week, my article takes you to the Yellow House in Girard. You can spend a week or a month at the house on the second floor. Jack and Kathy Watts restored this historic mansion’s second and third floors. Guests will discover views of green acres — farmland galore — to love from all the windows and the cupola. The peaceful surroundings are just the ticket for unplugging. Read my story. and watch the video by Jack Hanrahan at Historic Girard home opens for rentals.

Sue Scholz tells us about all the cutest Lego gardens right here in Erie. Read about it at Learn about Lego gardens at the Erie Zoo, and Meadville decorator Marie Feltz won a national contest. She tells us about it in The story behind a first-place office design.

And, here’s the flipbook — you can page through House to Home on your tablet!

I’m going to do some planting on my front porch, and I am thinking of wild color — maybe just the pots. Maybe the flowers. Maybe more. I’ll share it next week. Have a happy home and garden weekend!

We have some of the best decorating ideas I have seen in a while in House to Home this week, and check out the fabulous video that Rob Frank of GoErie.com and Christine Yamrick pulled together on a lovely $400,000 Sun Lake home listed for sale at 10611 Locust Knoll in Girard.

For the holidays, our decorating duo of writers from Sassy Peacock serve up several ideas that even I could do, and I will. Read their article here.

I wrote about Adelmo and Eleda Duchini’s home for sale. Read it here. The Duchini name is synonymous with block and brick in our region, and this home shows off that Italian heritage inside and out.

We have some more ideas on holiday decorating with lanterns — something so simple and so elegant. Read the story here.

And check out the article by Sue Scholz about a wonderful team of local folks who have gained national recognition from the Smithsonian Institution for the World War II Memorial at West 26th and State streets.
