Sparkle! Plenty of holiday ware is out. Don’t buy it all before I get there!

Marnie Mead, Gerry Weis, Andy Colwell and I — all of the Erie Times-News already got the tour, and now you can get inside. Starting at 8 a.m. today, Gabriel Brothers Inc. opens its largest Gabe’s in the United States right here at Summit Towne Centre in Erie.

The 86,000-square-foot store (the former K-Mart) opens with special offers, prizes, food, music and family fun. Erie store manager Anthony Reynolds conducted an impressive tour. One big thing — the dressing rooms: bigger by almost double. And you’ll find more of everything — more brand names and a lot more merchandise.

We weren’t allowed to buy anything because the store was not officially open. And none of the merchandise from the other store is in the new one. What is in the new store? Brand names I had never seen in the other store, and I don’t think I’m allowed to tell you what they are, but trust me, you need to visit.

I learned to add Gabe’s to my shopping trips years ago, thanks to my daughter and a lawyer friend of mine. It’s a treat. A huge thanks to Gabe’s PR folks Christine Vanin and Brooke Woolnough of High View Communications for the invite and tour. And good luck to store manager Anthony Reynolds. He got to know a lot of customers by their first names in the old store, and I’m sure he’ll make more friends at the new place.

More glitz and glam. I like the gold!

Spacious dressing rooms — I think these are double the size of the old Gabe’s.

Shoes, boots as far as the eye can see. Let me at them!

Be jeweled!

Big aisles, nice displays — see you there!

pizza2It’s National Cheese Pizza Day. I prefer a lot of stuff on my cheese pizza, but hey, any excuse to eat pizza is a good one!

If you need a yummy idea for cheese pizza and want to make your own, and add a bunch of stuff to it, try Jennie Geisler’s recipe for chicken sausage, sweet onion and fennel pizza. Click right here.

That’s Jennie’s photo at left.

And click here for Marnie Mead’s recipe for asparagus, prosciutto and egg pizza. Or call out for a pizza. It’s a great day for it!

locker chandelierIs that a chandelier in that locker? Why, yes it it is. When my boss, Marnie Mead, told me her daughter, Nicole Oberle,  had a chandelier in her locker, I was thinking she went to school with Harry Potter.

But no. Magnets, mirrors, wallpaper, mini chandeliers and assorted accents adorn as many lockers as homes. Preteens have taken interior design way inside the school and into their lockers … and outside the locker at some schools.

The video at left is from ABC-TV’s Lara Spencer in 2011. She did the video after she read a story in the New York Times about how lockers have become a vehicle for self expression for middle schoolers.

The idea was a hit with two moms who founded LockerLookz. Click on the link for some locker looks, and check out the Pottery Barn teen site for more great ideas.

Jordyn ColaoWe are all connected to our pasts, and they often help us find our futures. This month in Her Times, a lot of women share some outstanding pasts, presents and futures with us.

Cover girl Jordyn Colao is vying for Miss America this week, and I had no idea that Jordyn, a McDowell High School and Penn State grad, frequented our neighborhood for the past decade until my daughter told me Jordyn was friends with our neighbor. Jordyn also went to PSU with our photographer Andy Colwell. Catch the video Andy did of Jordyn here. In the video, Miss Pennsylvania shared that she has collected some substantial scholarship money as a result of winning pageants — a big bonus to any college student. She has been training in tap dance at Miss Lucy’s since she was a tot. Read the full article on Jordyn here, And vote for Jordyn online to become one of the 15 Miss America finalists. Here’s the link. It only takes a minute to vote!

Her Times also offers up women’s stories of reflection. You have to look back before you can go forward. It’s too easy at this time of year to regret what we didn’t accomplish — we have to congratulate ourselves on what we DID do. Marnie Mead shares her own extraordinary story of courage and triumph this month. It is a must-read right here. We also salute extraordinary women and an award-winning interior designer who says being a waitress taught her some of her most valuable career skills.

We also get a dose of leggy fashion, makeup tips, what’s happening at salons and directions on how to plan our futures with big dreams. And real women share advice they would have given their younger selves. Here are links to all the stories in Her Times:
