A hobby evolved into international Internet sales for a local Erie woman.

“It started out as a hobby making hair barrettes for my friends and family, and it took off,” said Megs Shearman, owner of Bella Olivia Tutus and Accessories. ”Now I’m doing international orders.”

Her fancy rosette barrettes led to headbands and fascinators (for big girls, babies and little girls), and then she added baby bow ties, ruffled everything, tutus, boot and leg warmers and more. Her creations have been featured in Babiekins Magazine and were selected for the magazine’s 2012 Gift Guide. You can see her terrific inventory on Facebook or at her Bella Olivia Tutus and Accessories site or on her Etsy site. And those tutus are soft enough that baby skin never touches itchy tulle.

While the tot stuff is darling, the fascinators are fascinating. What would we have done without Catherine, duchess of Cambridge, to bring that fashion statement full circle? And who knows — Kate could be in the market for a tutu in 2013.

Back here in Erie, Shearman is getting her own international media attention. She was recognized by Shabby Apple as an emerging designer, with three couture pieces sold on the site. Here’s your chance to get into the fun — win a baby tutu from Bella Olivia Tutus and Accessories — sign up with a comment here or an email to Pam.parker@timesnews.com — I’ll pull a winner tomorrow — Wednesday at noon.

Great Christmas gift ideas — right here in Erie.
