Members of the 2012 U.S. Olympic team—which earned a record number of golds for women—from left: Missy Franklin, swimming; Gabby Douglas, gymnastics; Kayla Harrison, judo; Allyson Felix, track and field; Carli Lloyd, soccer.

These awesome women made gold more than an accessory at the Olympics.

Glamour magazine’s 2012 Women of the Year issue, photographed entirely by 114 women, hits newsstands and homes Nov. 6.

It’s a celebration of women — in sports and everywhere else.

Speaking of great and golden women, Gannon University and the Erie Insurance Arena will host the NCAA Division II Elite 8 women’s basketball championship tournament in March 2014.

WOOHOO and congrats to my tennis bud, Gannon University President Keith Taylor on one great achievement for Gannon University and Erie.  Read all about it here. The Gannon women’s basketball team went to the Elite 8, a few years ago.

Read more about the current Gannon women’s team here.

If you remember — some other local women brought big crowds to Erie in 2011, when Mercyhurst and Erie hosted the NCAA Division I Women’s Hockey Championship tournament.

Golden girls are all around us! Go girls!

If you need a reason to teach your kids to play golf, check out the teens who are making their marks on the links.

Karlie Zabrosky won her second straight EDWGA Stroke Play Tournament Saturday at Lake Shore Country Club. Read the full story from the Erie Times-News sport department here. Zabrosky, a three-time District 10 champion at McDowell, will head off to college golf at Seton Hall. Kelly Moylan was second, Tanica Bell was third, and Ari Capotis was fourth.

In golf for young men, Chris Kupniewski, 17, a senior at Northwestern Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy who plays golf for Strong Vincent, will try to become the first junior golfer to win three consecutive EDGA junior events. He won the Stroke Play at Downing Golf Course in 2011, and the Match Play at Erie Golf Club in June. He has a four-stroke lead in the tournament which ends today.  For more on the story, check right here

Other news in golf for ladies from the Erie Times-News: Gannon University has named Abby Sorensen its women’s golf coach. The Villa Maria Academy and Allegheny College graduate helped lead the Gators to their fifth consecutive top-10 finish at the NCAA Division III championships this past season.

A two-sport athlete at Villa Maria Academy in golf and softball, Sorensen helped lead the Victors golf team to a state runner-up finish in 2007.

If you hear the name Hansen pretty much anywhere in Erie County, chances are you’ll hear a story about a great athlete. Sarah Hansen, a General McLane grad, is taking her terrific high school hoops career to the next level as a Florida Gulf Coast Eagle.

The redshirt sophomore forward is making a mark as the team hits the floor for its first NCAA Division I tournament appearance. Read the entire Erie Times-News article about Sarah here.

This afternoon at 2:30 (check your local listings), the Eagles (29-2) will play St. Bonaventure (29-3), another team making its first NCAA appearance.

The 5-foot 11-inch Hansen leads the Eagles in scoring at 14.3 points per game and rebounding at 6.1 rebounds per game. She also has a 3.95 GPA and a chemistry major.

You’ve heard her sister’s name. Tori Hansen, the 2011 Times-News Female Athlete of the Year, set records at Division II West Liberty State and now has a professional career in Australia.

This should be an exciting game as the Eagles have some incredible shooters from 3-point range. ESPN 2 and ESPN 3 televise the NCAA women’s tournament which also includes Notre Dame and Erie’s Kayla McBride playing at 2 p.m.

Congrats to all the Erie women making Erie proud.
