After having the pleasure of watching Sandy Blazek of Trellis decorate Packard Manor Estate, we put up our Christmas tree. I looked at Packard tree photos and scoured Martha Stewart articles that would show me what to do with what I had. So technically, Sandy Blazek and Martha Stewart helped. I have glass ornaments, shiny stuff, angels, silver and gold stars, snowmen, sports ornaments, collectibles, antiques, Ninja turtles, Disney, and I think you get the picture. I put it all on the tree that my husband and I cut freshly from the halls of Macy’s. It needed something — color. I could almost hear Martha and Sandy shout “Ribbon!”

So off I went in the Parker sleigh to get enough red ribbon trimmed in gold to bundle the house. Cheap stuff. I wrapped the tree in it with folds that catch light and add dimension. It still needs a topper because I have melted the insides of most of the angels we used in the past. And I broke a few of them too. Dr. Parker, my husband, runs the nutcracker, ornament and angel hospital here. He can only do so much.

If you need some true tree inspiration, check out this week’s cover story in House to Home. It suggests adding craft store finds like silk roses, hydrangeas and magnolias to your tree branches and topping it off “with richly textured ribbon.” Hmmm. I think I need more ribbon! It’s a good thing.

Happy decorating!

My daughter's apartment gets some mementos from home: a few ornaments, holiday mugs, a sleigh and nutcrackers (not pictured) -- all in a new home -- hers.

The Nutcracker collection is on the road, and the snowman mugs have gone south. I don’t know why I didn’t think of this sooner. We’ve been distributing the Christmas decorations to the kids because none of them live here anymore. I would rather that they have a little bit of home in their new homes than keep all of it for their brief visits here to Chez Parker. The photo my daughter sent at left reminds me that we all used those snowman mugs together. Now, she and her boyfriend are sipping hot cider out of them and enjoying the tree we all picked out together. A nice tradition just got started.

The endless collection of nutcrackers has more significance now. Aunt Carol and Uncle Chuck Colwell started it for me years ago. Now, the baker and skier are at my daughter’s house while the fisherman and golfer will spend time with my oldest son. The tennis player and snowman are the perfect complement to my youngest son’s apartment. The boys will also get the San Francisco 49er and Green Bay Packer ornament collections.

I’m happy to see them enjoying a little bit of home. I remember when my mom and dad gave me their old stuff — some of it was 50 years old, and well, kind of scary. I tossed all the lights and funky wreaths that were hazards, but I did keep the nativity set until we couldn’t glue the pieces back together anymore. Then my kids bought me a set that looked just like it. Similarly, all those nutcrackers have spent time in nutcracker hospital here. But they are healthy in their new homes.
