Houzz porchNo — this is not my front porch, but we have that exact pot — two of them, in fact, by the front door. I bought them years ago.

And we do have pillars. Our porch is also covered. My husband and I decided to replace the front-porch furniture this year, and that prompted an all-out search for what we could do to dress it up.

I enjoy sitting out here and looking at all the greenery Mother Nature has furnished. And, what to plant, what to sit on and what looks good sent us to all the home and garden stores and www.Houzz.com for ideas.

I’m still not sure what I want, but we are making progress. Coleus is the plant that grows really well in those pots by the door. So I am in search of it. And I am a fan of geraniums because they have never let me down, and they keep the bees away.

One thing I love to read while on the porch is of course our very own House to Home.

This week, my article takes you to the Yellow House in Girard. You can spend a week or a month at the house on the second floor. Jack and Kathy Watts restored this historic mansion’s second and third floors. Guests will discover views of green acres — farmland galore — to love from all the windows and the cupola. The peaceful surroundings are just the ticket for unplugging. Read my story. and watch the video by Jack Hanrahan at Historic Girard home opens for rentals.

Sue Scholz tells us about all the cutest Lego gardens right here in Erie. Read about it at Learn about Lego gardens at the Erie Zoo, and Meadville decorator Marie Feltz won a national contest. She tells us about it in The story behind a first-place office design.

I’m going to do some planting on my front porch, and I am thinking of wild color — maybe just the pots. Maybe the flowers. Maybe more. I’ll share it next week. Have a happy home and garden weekend!

back patioIt’s been a long time since I could sit and write on the patio or front porch, and the past two days — I have been on both to write this blog. I have always loved porches — from sitting on my grandmother’s front porch on a busy street in Greenville, Pa., to the patio my parents had to the one I installed on an old house in northwest Millcreek to this house.

Now that everything is getting green, the view is terrific. Like most folks, we are a little worried about some of the plants, shrubs and trees that the polar vortex may have decimated. I see some new plantings in the future here at Chez Parker.

In this week’s House to Home, I offer some inexpensive gift ideas for Mother’s Day — some are free. Read my column here.

Sue Scholz tells us about all the rhododendron tours coming up. Mine don’t look ready for tours in the near future, but other folks must be having better luck. Read her column here: Rhododendron show coming up. Other stories you’ll want to read include:

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms, and especially to all the women who have mommed me over the years. Thanks! Enjoy the weekend.

sharks2I love to hear interviews with real estate mogul Barbara Corcoran, 65, of “Shark Tank” because she tells it like it is.  In an ABC-TV interview on “Nightline Prime,” she noted that homes are disappearing fast in the current market, and there’s no time to waste thinking about making an offer — because someone will beat you to it. She sees bidding wars in big cities.

Here’s a link to the video of how the network followed a few families on their home-buying journeys.

Local Realtors don’t see the problems big city Realtors do, but most folks will say inventory could always be better because buyers need and want a selection. Perfectly staged, move-in ready, accurately-priced homes get offers within days. Also, the new construction market is booming — something Corcoran agrees is happening due to the pent-up demand for new homes.
