back patioIt’s been a long time since I could sit and write on the patio or front porch, and the past two days — I have been on both to write this blog. I have always loved porches — from sitting on my grandmother’s front porch on a busy street in Greenville, Pa., to the patio my parents had to the one I installed on an old house in northwest Millcreek to this house.

Now that everything is getting green, the view is terrific. Like most folks, we are a little worried about some of the plants, shrubs and trees that the polar vortex may have decimated. I see some new plantings in the future here at Chez Parker.

In this week’s House to Home, I offer some inexpensive gift ideas for Mother’s Day — some are free. Read my column here.

Sue Scholz tells us about all the rhododendron tours coming up. Mine don’t look ready for tours in the near future, but other folks must be having better luck. Read her column here: Rhododendron show coming up. Other stories you’ll want to read include:

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms, and especially to all the women who have mommed me over the years. Thanks! Enjoy the weekend.

sharks2I love to hear interviews with real estate mogul Barbara Corcoran, 65, of “Shark Tank” because she tells it like it is.  In an ABC-TV interview on “Nightline Prime,” she noted that homes are disappearing fast in the current market, and there’s no time to waste thinking about making an offer — because someone will beat you to it. She sees bidding wars in big cities.

Here’s a link to the video of how the network followed a few families on their home-buying journeys.

Local Realtors don’t see the problems big city Realtors do, but most folks will say inventory could always be better because buyers need and want a selection. Perfectly staged, move-in ready, accurately-priced homes get offers within days. Also, the new construction market is booming — something Corcoran agrees is happening due to the pent-up demand for new homes.

Want to check out the local scene? Here’s what’s in House to Home  today:

I wrote about five homes for sale in Woodshire — located on the east side of Sterrettania Road. Here’s a link to my story. Other stories include:

Turkey breast $15, potatoes from the CSA — cheap, emergency bill for the plumber who works on Thanksgiving Day to clean the dirt and peels out of the clogged sink drain — priceless.

Over the years, we’ve survived family holidays where someone forgot to turn the oven on, the refrigerator blew and other minor but funny disasters.

Today, a big thanks goes out to Roto-Rooter’s Erie office. A frantic call from us at about 4 p.m., and a plumber showed up lickety-split to save Thanksgiving Day.

What we learned: If you have a garbage disposal, it’s not for all garbage — no noodles, rice, apple or potato peels — and lots more. Little did we know, but we do now. Click here for some tips from Roto-Rooter on how to prevent clogs.
