Babies born, patients moved and much more proved that people helped each other and conquered natural disasters this week. Just check out the story about Christine Schleppy who started having contractions while hunkered down at home with her family in Skillman, N.J. She was 35 weeks pregnant, and she and her husband, David, worried about the baby and getting to a medical center.

An ambulance arrived — no small feat — and it got stuck in the mud. Another ambulance took the family to a mobile medical unit set up by the Hackensack University Medical Center. It was located in the gym of a local church.

Mom received no drugs, and the Schleppys welcomed healthy Liam Alexander, just over 5 pounds, in the midst of a hurricane. Read more right here.

Many more inspiring stories are out there. The video of nurses moving patients and NICU babies down dark stairwells at New York University’s Langone Medical Center after generators failed. Check out the story here.  And here’s a link to a touching message by PBS’ Elmo explaining the hurricane to kids.
