About Tall Ship Tales:
Six Erie women — Valerie Weaver, Linda Stevens, Beth Zimmer, Robin Scheppner, Claudia Thornburg and Rachel DeSimone — flew to Macinaw Island, Mich., on Sunday, Sept. 5, climbed aboard the Unicorn — an all female-crewed tall ship — and set sail Monday morning bound for Erie and this weekend’s Tall Ships Festival (Sept. 10-12).
Valerie Weaver, Her Times magazine’s fashion writer, is sending us updates all week about their adventures on the ship. Make no mistake — this is no pleasure cruise — all six women will be working hard as real crew members.

We just set from Macinaw Island! We boarded ship at 4 p.m. The first thing we did was climb up the the shrouds 58 feet high. Wow! It was frightening. I almost made it to top when my fear of heights set in. Everyone else was fine.
After that, we had two hours of safety drills. We are all in one small room in the bow. There are six bunks and very, very close quarters; no room for anything, but yourself.
We are on rotating night watch. Claudia and I have the shift from 2 to 6 am. Every half hour we will have to plot and check the engine room. We are really working.
Rachel came down with a bad chest cold on Sat. and is still not feeling well.
Must get up on deck — boy is it dark out here!
Check back soon for the next Tall Ship Tales update from Valerie and the other Erie women aboard the Unicorn.
