In a letter to the editor yesterday in the Erie Times-News, a 72-year-old man wrote a great letter. James Ligons of Erie wrote that high school athletes should learn to play tennis because of the hand and eye coordination, footwork and endurance.

As a tennis player, I endorse that!  He added another note about men playing tennis in their 80s and 90s. Very true — I play with them, and they can kick your butt any day of the week!

There was a time when I was going to give up tennis because of my bad runner’s knees. Then I played with these guys. And gals. You’ll never quit if you see these folks in action.

If you want to take up the game, visit Westwood Racquet Club or Pennbriar Athletic Club.  They can hook you and your kids up with a lesson just to see if you like it. My kids have played since they were little. They never played competitively like I did, but they all acknowledge that it improves balance in nearly every sport.

And this week, you can tune into Wimbledon where you’ll see some professional tennis action.  And for anyone who says it’s too expensive — I spent more money bowling than I ever did at tennis. Read Ligons’ letter here.

Thanks to Tom Reisenweber’s #Erielive updates all day yesterday, I tuned in to state championship tennis at Hershey where Erie’s Mario Nicolia and Alex Brzozowski won the title. I shared every minute on Facebook. Watch Tom Reisenweber’s video clip of the last few minutes of play right here.

Cathedral Prep’s Mario Nicolia won a silver medal in the 2011 PIAA Class AAA doubles championship, but this year, teamed with Alex Brzozowski, it was all gold yesterday. The Ramblers served up the school’s first state title since 1984.  According to Erie Times-News stories, the pair have played together in USTA tournaments since their freshman year and most recently won a USTA event at Pennbriar Athletic Club in February. I watched Brzozowski, the son of Dr. Jan and Sharon Brzozowski, play tennis at Westwood Racquet Club, my home court where I have played for more than 30 years.

Nicolia and Brzozowski are a tall order — both 6-feet-tall with terrific wing spans, and that’s tough to beat in tennis. Add in fast hands, quick feet, and that’s a deadly team on the net and for full court coverage. Coach Kent Peightal said this doubles team knows how to strategize, and that’s a gift.

There is nothing easy about states — no matter what sport kids are involved in. We’ve been there five times for track and field and cross-country. Nicolia and Brzozowski played two matches on Friday and then two more on Saturday to win it. Indoors. I’m a veteran of indoor tennis — it’s stifling hot, and well, you are indoors.

In stories in the Erie Times-News, the tennis champs had been quoted as wanting a banner in the school gym. They brought more than a banner back to Erie.

With school almost out, a few more kids may hit the courts around town with a little more optimism. If Nicolia and Brzozowski can do it, many more kids will realize what hard work right here in Erie, Pa., can do.
