Anyone have a food grinder?

My supervisor and I were chatting yesterday and she mentioned she had a Foley Mill. It’s a food grinder you can find for about $30 at places like Amazon. I have a Kitchen Aid stand mixer, so I’m thinking about getting a grinder attachment with a gift card I got for Christmas. Does anyone have a grinder and are willing to share some advice? What do you grind with it, and where you got yours?

I’m also eying a stock pot or a stove-top grill pan. I can’t figure out which of the three I want more.

I should probably just get some shoes. I really need them more than I do kitchen stuff. But to me shoes are much less interesting than kitchen stuff.

I can’t help you with the food grinder question. However, if you get a stock pot, you may want to consider splurging on Pampered Chef. They are non-stick both indside and out, which is GREAT for clean-up when — not if — things boil over. One quick wipe and it’s clean. Now let’s talk shoes…

Jennie- Happy New Year and enjoying your blogs. With your canning sucess this year, I think you would benefit from the K-A food grinder attachment. I use mine for grinding peppers, onions tomatos and garden produce to make chile sauce (great on roast beef, sandwiches, dips) and green tomato relish. All family recipes handed down. Great for home and gifts. Afoley mill would help with smooth sauces and soups but if you have an immersion blender, it can do the same. Good luck and keep us informed. Beth

Jennie, I use my foley food mill to make applesauce. The easiest way I have found to do it is (wash the apples) use a corer/slicer to cut the apples into equal portions and cook them with a little bit of water in the bottom of the pot so they don’t burn…cook them till soft. Then run them through the food mill. Gets the skins off as well as purees the sauce. Then I season the sauce to taste, I might use brown sugar, spices, and even a pinch of salt and butter. Like apple pie.

When we bought my stand mixer, we also got the shredder and the grinder. These are dishwasher washable but a pain to get on and off the mixer. Especially the shredder..you need to have kevlar gloves or at least protect your hand with a dish towel. Kitchen Aid customer service was very, very poor. I think I had to go to Amazon website & check out the customer reviews to find out how to assemble and dis – assemble the add – ons.

They sound marvelous, but they usually duplicate what you probably already have in your kitchen.

I have a Rival food grinder that I got from Wal Mart about ten years ago. I use it to make what my Mom always called monkey meat but it’s just ground up bologna and dill pickles with miracle whip added for sandwich spread. I also use it to make zucchini relish and roast beef hash. I make ham salad with leftover ham from Christmas and use sweet pickles for that. I really like it. Years ago I had one that screwed onto the table edge. This electric one is alot easier.

That sounds good. I might try that one if I can find it. I don’t know. It’s on my wish list. But I already have a food processor and a blender and an immersion blender, so I don’t really NEEEED it …
