Mercyhurst University to host Relay for Life

Mercyhurst University kicks off its Relay for Life event at noon today.

Over 300 registered participants have raised just over $19,000 for cancer research as part of this year’s event. The money raised goes to the American Cancer Society.

During the 24-hour fundraiser, relay team members take turns walking around the Mercyhurst University track. For those taking a break, there are music, activities and food.

When night falls, Relay for Life hosts the Luminaria Ceremony, during which candles are lit in paper bags to honor those touched by cancer.

Cancer survivors also walk a Survivor’s Lap during the relay.

Whether your life has been touched by cancer or not, this is a great way to give back. I participated in a Relay for Life when I was in high school, and it was a fantastic experience.

Not only are you raising more for cancer, you’re also afforded an opportunity to exercise and spend time with friends, family and coworkers.

For those who can’t participate in this weekend’s event, there will be several relays in the Erie area in upcoming months, including one on Penn State Behrend’s campus on June 15 and 16.

If you want to volunteer at the event or a future local Relay for Life, fill out this form.
