Barber National Institute seeks tutors

Volunteers are needed to tutor adults in the Adult Basic Education/Adult Literacy program at the Barber National Institute. The volunteers would provide one-on-one or small group tutoring to help adults with developmental disabilities increase their academic skills, particularly in the areas of reading and math.

Volunteers must have a bachelor’s degree or be currently working on a degree in any field of study and be willing to provide two to three hours per week of tutoring. The program provides an orientation, as well as all learning materials and ongoing training and support. Classes integrate technology, including iPads and computers.

The Barber National Institute program is the only program in Pennsylvania providing ABE/Adult Literacy for adults with disabilities. Classes run Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. from September through early June.

For more information or to arrange a classroom visit, contact Judy Stewart at 874-5618 or judystewart@barberinstitute.org.
