The Chronicle of Philanthropy released its list of “nonprofits to watch” on Thursday.

It’s an election year and the nation turns its attention to Washington, and not surprisingly, so did The Chronicle of Philanthropy.

Political nonprofits on the list included the American Enterprise Institute, which the Chronicle described as “promoting free-enterprise ideas in the presidential race,” and CForward, a partisan politics advocate.

The Girl Scouts of America, celebrating its 100th birthday this year, made the list by announcing the “Year of the Girl” campaign. The nonprofit hopes to raise $1 billion over the next five years to be spent on programs and services for girls.

That’s a lot of cookies.

But the most surprising nonprofit on the list was the Occupy Wall Street movement.

As The Chronicle of Philanthropy reported:

However [the movement] evolves, the movement challenges nonprofits and foundations to consider how to tap into the energy that has propelled thousands of people to occupy parks, squares, and campuses across the country.

Here’s to getting more volunteers to “occupy” nonprofits in the coming year!
